After months of door-to-door campaigning, thousands of volunteer hours, paid advertising, news releases, a kickoff rally, letters to the editor, radio spots and other outreach, the Monroe County Community School Corp. referendum campaign saw a landslide victory Tuesday night, guaranteeing $7.3 million a year for MCCSC schools for the next six years.

In the campaign headquarters at 2361 W. Rappel Ave., the three chairpersons of the committee, two campaign managers and MCCSC Superintendent Judy DeMuth waited for the results, but didn’t seem particularly anxious. Between an incredibly positive summer survey and supportive responses from community members, campaign manager Brian O’Neill said they all felt confident that the referendum would pass. In fact, they had a pool going to see who could get closest to guessing the winning percentage.

But at 8:17 p.m., when the polls showed 74 out of 84 precincts reporting an 81.38 percent “yes” vote, the whole room breathed a sigh of relief.

“This is super important,” said Lynn Coyne, one of the three chairs of the referendum committee. “This was monumentally important. There was no other option.”

When all the votes were in, the measure passed 38,033 to 8,752, or 81.29 percent in favor.
