Company to invest initial $30 million in massive cold storage facility in Anderson

Interstate Warehousing Inc., a Tippmann Group company, has purchased 77 acres near the intersection of Layton Road and 73rd Street.

The company broke ground on the facility this morning. Officials expect the 250,000-square-foot facility to be completed by the end of the third quarter of next year. 

The $30 million investment includes $20 million in real property and $10 million in personal property.

Interstate Warehousing is expected to increase the size of the Anderson facility through additional phases that would eventually total 1 million square feet of cold storage and employ 200 people.

“We choose Anderson because it was a good strategic fit for our business,” said John Tippmann Jr., president of the Tippmann Group. “This new location will provide us with additional opportunities to expand our customer base and continue to grow our company.”

The city of Anderson is providing a seven-year 50 percent tax abatement on the real property and a 60 percent seven-year abatement on the personal property, Anderson Mayor Thomas Broderick Jr. said.

“That was important to me,” Broderick said of the incentive package. “We wanted to encourage the investment but at the same time protect the tax base.”

Broderick said the company is expected to hire 60 people with an average salary of $56,000 a year. He said the annual payroll would be in excess of $3.2 million.

The company has agreed to provide two internships to Anderson High School students and one scholarship.

The Tippmann Group's construction company will build the facility.

Broderick said Nestle is one of Interstate Warehousing's customers. A Nestle production and distribution plant is located near the site where the Interstate Warehousing facility will be built. 

The facility will be a multi-temperature storage warehouse with about 30,000 pallet positions and state-of-the-art equipment featuring some of the newest technology in the industry, according to local officials.

Greg Winkler, executive director of the Anderson Economic Development Department, said all the needed utilities are in place for the development.

The Tippmann Group and Interstate Warehousing are the third-largest providers of cold storage in the nation and a top builder of cold storage facilities for other companies, he said

Winkler said the city had been in negotiations for about six months to bring Interstate Warehousing to Anderson.

Interstate Warehousing currently has facilities in Franklin and Indianapolis, along with five other locations around the country.
