MUNCIE — Acknowledging that Delaware County is likely to build a new jail, officials on Monday approved an agreement with an Indianapolis company that will guide the county through financing a jail project.

The Delaware County commissioners approved an employment agreement with Indianapolis law firm Bingham Greenebaum Doll to explore financing for jail building.

The agreement comes in the wake of an Aug. 31 letter to the commissioners from state jail inspector Chance Sweat, who wrote that the county jail, on the second floor of the Delaware County Justice Center, was not in compliance with state standards.

The jail is under-staffed and frequently over its 200-plus inmate capacity, the inspector said, adding that various problems "will lead to a critical incident in the jail."

Sweat gave the commissioners 180 days to "develop a plan of action."
