ANDERSON — Indiana's second-largest health provider has laid off 14 employees in Anderson and another 71 employees across the state.

Gene Ford, manager of public relations for St. Vincent, confirmed 14 of the employees are based in Anderson.

Ford said those affected by the layoffs are being encouraged to apply for other employment opportunities within the company. He said of the 14 Anderson employees, some have applied for other positions and "a few" have accepted other jobs within the system.

"Our goal is to keep as many affected associates in our system as possible," Ford said.

St. Vincent Health confirmed statewide "staffing changes" in a statement Thursday, citing a "responsibility to transform our delivery system to ensure we have a sustainable model for the future."

The cuts follow 75 layoffs that St. Vincent made earlier this year across the state, affecting nurses, tech workers and support staff and more than 100 layoffs last year affecting patient access representatives, insurance specialists, medical records transcriptionists and other positions.

In April, Mike Schroyer, president of the St. Vincent Northeast Region, said 44 St. Vincent Anderson employees resigned, retired or were reassigned or laid off.

Schroyer said 20 of the employees laid off earlier in the year found new employment within the St. Vincent and Ascension networks; 13 were laid off from the company with a severance package; six resigned instead of accepting a new position; and five received retirement benefits and pensions.

St. Vincent did not file a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) — a 60-day notice meant to inform workers, families and communities of advanced closings or mass layoffs by an employer — with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development because less than 33 percent of the company’s employees are affected.

In 2017, St. Vincent Anderson was Madison County's second-largest employer, with 1,388 employees, according to the Madison County Chamber's 2017 Business Directory and Resource Guide.

Statewide, St. Vincent employs about 16,000 employees and operates 20 hospitals from Anderson to Evansville. It trails Indiana University Health, which has about 33,000 workers.
