MISHAWAKA -- By summer, contractors will start ripping into School City of Mishawaka's leaky, crumbled buildings, and by fall, almost 800 of the district's 5,000-plus students will go home with tablets or laptops. Teachers and other staffs could see raises for the 2018-'19 school year and beyond.

But the first step came Wednesday, one day after about 71 percent of voters approved a property tax hike that would generate $25.6 million to pay for all of this. The two referendums will secure $1.8 million per year over seven years for the district's operations, and an additional $13 million for capital improvements.

On Wednesday, the school board approved pursuing two loans so that the district can start work right away.
