Bloomington police responded to at least 15 heroin and synthetic marijuana overdoses during the day on Friday, as the area’s recent spike of drug overdoses continued.

On Thursday, police arrested two transient men in connection with dealing Spice, heroin and methamphetamine. Last weekend’s overdoses primarily occurred along East Kirkwood Avenue.

On Friday, the overdose cases occurred elsewhere downtown and across the city.

Bloomington Police Department Chief Mike Diekhoff confirmed that 15 people had overdosed on either Spice or heroin by 4 p.m. Friday.

Two people overdosed across the street from the Shalom Community Center, at South Walnut and East Wylie streets, during the afternoon. A few hours later, three people overdosed at the same time in Seminary Park at Walnut and Second streets, where police were dispatched to reports of two people on the ground and a third person running around acting strangely.

There was a suspected overdose at the Burger King on South Walnut Street, and another inside a bank on North Jacob Drive.

These suspected overdoses from Friday — again, as of 4 p.m. — surpassed an earlier record of 10 overdose cases, including one death, reported on June 22.
