LAFAYETTE - Tariffs between the U.S. and China are hitting Carroll County hard.

Carroll County is one of the 15 counties in the U.S. that are getting hit the hardest by the tariffs, according to an analysis of labor market data from the Brookings Institution

More than 35 percent of the county's workforce works in industries targeted by the tariffs, according to the analysis. The county's animal slaughtering industry is the largest impacted.

"These figures show that these modest tariffs do touch down in uneven but real ways in real communities in Indiana," said Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

The U.S. imposed a 25 percent tariff on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods on July 6. China retaliated by doing the same on U.S. goods, including agricultural products and automobiles.
