It is my pleasure to welcome you and introduce you to my friend Don Hurd, the new owner of the Carroll County Comet weekly community newspaper.

Don isn’t new to the area, he has been in the newspaper business in neighboring White County for decades, and most recently has been involved in saving weekly community newspapers which were on the verge of fading into the past, taking with them the community identity which they had been so much a part of.

Community newspapers are a vital part of towns and cities as much now as they have been throughout their history. They provide a written record of the life of a community. As a researcher of Carroll County Indiana history for over 50 years, including being the editor of The Journal newspaper in Delphi, there is no way in which we could look at how the communities grew, prospered, suffered, or even faded into the past without these written records which our community newspapers have been. For that reason, I am very pleased that Don has stepped up to ensure that this community newspaper will continue operation.

I am especially pleased that Don has the right idea of how a community newspaper should be run, and that the Comet should primarily focus on life in Carroll County, filled with names and faces of those who live in Carroll County. Don is also looking for reporters and freelance writers who will produce stories that are free from personal bias.

Residents of the community need to be honestly informed, not misled with the personal agenda of a writer.

It is the desire of Don that the Carroll County Comet will be a newspaper that the community is proud of, and which listens to subscribers and readers about what they expect in their weekly newspaper.

So how can you help the Comet become all that it can be? You can contribute news from your community and social groups. Are you a weekly reader? You can send your suggestions to Don about the content you would like to see in your newspaper. Are you a freelance writer? Contact Don about contributing news. If you are a business owner, you can support the Comet with your advertising. If you are a reader, you can support those businesses whose advertising dollars help keep the local news coming to you. Together, the residents of Carroll County can make the Carroll County Comet a weekly newspaper that they are indeed proud of.
