EVANSVILLE — Developers who plan new usage of the former Schnucks grocery store at 4600 Washington Ave. received a tax incentive from the Evansville City Council.

The seven-year phase-in on property taxes was approved 9-0, and it's worth about $425,000 to Washington Plaza Evansville LLC, led by Tyler Hinds and Dilip Patel.

It's a planned $4.8 million investment in the 60,000-square foot empty building, said Ellen Horan, executive director of Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville. The council has a callback provision if the investment isn't made and jobs aren't created at the site.

Hinds said his goal is to attract "professional, high-end offices, medical ideally."

"We’ve been working in that area for a long time, been driving by it for years and years, and thought something better could be done with it," Hinds said. "We’re in negotiations trying to attract national tenants. They have certain demands on what their expectations are, and we are trying to meet those."

Schnucks left the property in late 2016 to go to a new store across South Green River Road.
