AUBURN — The DeKalb County Council took action to help pay for the housing of jail inmates in area facilities Monday.
The Council made an additional appropriation of $51.694 to cover bills for October, November and December received from other facilities after the budget for 2017 was already set. Money designated for 2017 had to be used to pay the costs.
The state reimburses the jail $35 per inmate per day, and some of the additional appropriation included those payments. The state money is for housing only and not food, clothing, transportation or medical care, however.
The DeKalb jail population is capped at 80, and other prisoners are sent mostly to Steuben or Noble counties.
Council Attorney Don Stuckey pointed out that costs for juveniles are substantially high, and the county receives no reimbursement for them.
