Gov. Eric Holcomb wants federal funds for Medicaid expansion in Indiana

"I want to make sure that we are compassionate and we cover the Hoosiers that we are right now," he said Monday. "I completely believe we have to fix the Affordable Care Act, and the repeal was the right first step, but the devil's always in the details."

Holcomb's stance comes as Congress is working on a health care replacement plan that could shift the financial burden to the states for millions of Americans' health care.

A report from the Congressional Budget Office issued Monday said up to 21 million Americans could lose coverage by 2021 and that number could rise to 24 million by 2026.

"The reductions in insurance coverage between 2018 and 2026 would stem in large part from changes in Medicaid enrollment — because some states would discontinue their expansion of eligibility," the report said.
