INDIANAPOLIS — Police responding to a serious or fatal vehicle crash likely will be required to attempt to contact a friend or relative for any person injured or killed.
It previously passed the Senate, 45-3.
If enacted, Hoosiers will be asked to list two emergency contacts in their BMV record that police must call, "within a reasonable amount of time," following a motor vehicle crash involving serious injury or death.
State Rep. Tony Cook, R-Cicero, the sponsor, said he was motivated to create a state emergency contact database when he learned that a constituent only heard about her son's car accident once he had died from his injuries, more than six hours after the crash in a hospital just six miles away from his mother.
The legislation requires the database be operational no later than July 1, 2019.
