TIPTON – The City of Tipton Common Council Tuesday approved a resolution allowing for the closure of an alleyway in the 100 block of South Main Street to make way for The Alley – an upcoming public gathering space.
The project will be funded with over $20,000 raised locally coupled with a $20,000 grant from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
Renderings of the upcoming Tipton County Economic Development Organization and Tipton Main Street Association project show new tables, chairs, strings of lights and pieces of artwork adorning the alleyway. It sits between the Pizza King and Subway and the McNeal Building, and stretches for 93 feet. The resolution for the closure calls for the alley to be closed for 10 years.
In a previous interview with the Tribune, TCEDO Director Nathan Kring said the idea for the project was inspired by similar projects in Kokomo and Noblesville, and came together as a joint venture between the TCEDO and the Tipton Main Street Association. The revamped alleyway will be used for public recreation and a venue for Main Street Association events.
The Main Street Association received a $5,000 donation from the Campbell Family Donation, said Kring, and they also received large donations from Encompass Credit Union along with some private donors who gave $1,000.
