LIBERTY – Imposing an innkeepers tax in Union County could relieve some of the county’s ’s financial woes, but county officials say they need more information about the tax before they take that step.

Commissioners were unclear this week whether the innkeeper tax would include state park cabins and campgrounds.

Commission President Paul Wiwi said adopting the tax would be a big help to the county if campgrounds are included.

Seventy-five counties already have the innkeeper tax, Wiwi said.

“A lot of the surrounding counties have enacted the tax. We ought to consider it. It could help pay the ambulance fees,” Wiwi said.

The county’s annual ambulance bill increased by about $110,000 this year and officials are worried it may increase again in 2018.
