Instead of learning within the confines of four walls of a classroom, imagine learning in a greenspace filled with plant life, beside your fellow peers. Such is the vision the Elkhart Education Foundation (EEF) has for elementary schools in the Elkhart community.

The foundation is looking to build "learning gardens" in all 14 elementary schools across the Elkhart Community Schools district.

For the time being, the group is starting its pilot program at two elementary schools, Hawthorne and Monger.

EEF Executive Director Ashley Molyneaux said the pilot program will allow the organization to make changes to the design of the gardens before they are built across all of the district’s elementary schools.

“The hope is to learn from our mistakes and improve the program through trial-and-error,” Molyneaux said. “Then we’ll be able to move ahead more quickly at the other schools when we figure it all out.”
