MUNCIE – The saga of two closed elementary schools that Muncie Community Schools has been trying to sell might have a happy ending for the school system and the neighborhoods where they are located.

Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns told the Star Press this week that Ball State has agreed to purchase Mitchell Elementary for $385,000 and Sutton Elementary for $50,000. A letter dated Feb. 21 was sent to MCS and the city of Muncie by Ball State stating a willingness to purchase the schools.

Mearns said he received a call from the emergency managers at MCS indicating they would like to proceed with the sale of Mitchell and Sutton. Mearns said the emergency managers have agreed to the price.

According to the letter Ball State sent to MCS, the price for Mitchell is the higher of two appraisals on the building, once appraisal conducted by MCS at $163,500 and another by Ball State at $385,000.

A statement from Administrator Assistance, the firm providing emergency managers for MCS, said MCS has accepted the Ball State offer for Sutton and Mitchell.
