CAMBRIDGE CITY — A Wayne County food processor received a 10-year tax abatement this week from county leaders as part of ongoing efforts at the facility to add more than $5 million in new equipment and create up to 75 new jobs.

SugarCreek Packing Co., an anchor for the Gateway Industrial Park that already has invested more than $120 million in its local operations since 2014, received approval on its tax abatement request during Wednesday's Wayne County Council meeting.

Citing the company's continued efforts to increase production and employment at the facility, the council gave SugarCreek a 10-year, sliding-scale abatement on the equipment, which decreases by 10 percent each year.

The Washington Court House, Ohio-based SugarCreek has six facilities in Indiana, Ohio and Kansas that are responsible for processing proteins and other products for commercial and retail clients.

Peter Zaleski, county council president, said the investment by the company indicates it plans to remain in the area on a long-term basis and has a desire to hire more local workers to meet client needs.
