The first four months of this year marked the first time the number of homes sold by area Realtors matched the number of homes sold during the same period in 2006 – the peak of home sales before the recession-driven housing crisis.

And it's about time, said Realtor Todd Stock of RE/MAX Results, Fort Wayne, and a board member of the Upstate Alliance of Realtors, also known as UPSTAR, which gathers the statistics.

“It was a long time to recover. It took basically 10 years – well, more than that,” he said. Attaining the milestone, he said “shows the market is now recovered and strong.”

So strong that Realtor.com, a popular online home-sales site, last month dubbed the Fort Wayne area the 11th “hottest” market in the nation – up three slots from April.

The ranking is based on the number of people that are viewing homes on Realtor.com as a measure of buyer demand and the median number of days houses stay on the market as an indicator of supply.
