Ivy Tech Community College’s South Bend and Elkhart County locations soon will be considered one “campus” under a statewide restructuring the college announced this week.

The two locations will be led by a single chancellor, not yet named, and will work together to improve services to students and employers in this region, according to the college.

The restructuring is intended to better serve students and to make campuses more responsive to workforce needs, Ivy Tech President Sue Ellspermann said in a telephone interview Tuesday.

“We’ll be putting more of our resources into student-facing departments,” she said. These changes “should reduce friction across the system.”

Ellspermann said the changes are prompted by feedback she received from hundreds of faculty and staff throughout the state during her statewide tour of campuses last summer after she became Ivy Tech’s president.

No Ivy Tech locations are slated to close and no layoffs are planned as a result of the restructuring, the president said.

Announcements about some chancellor appointments will be made within the next two weeks, with all those positions expected to be filled by Aug. 1. Other top campus administrators are expected to be announced by Oct. 1.

The restructuring plan was the result of work done by an 18-member reorganization committee that has been meeting for about six months.
