SOUTH BEND — Amid news reports that President Donald Trump may end an Obama-era program that protects immigrants who entered the country illegally as children, the University of Notre Dame's president is urging Trump to keep the program.

"We urge the president to continue to give status to young people who have done nothing wrong, most of whom have only known life in the United States and who will make important contributions to it. Notre Dame intends to support these students and asks the administration to do the same," the Rev. John I. Jenkins said Thursday evening in a written statement.

A senior administration official said Thursday that Trump is expected to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or "Dreamers," program, the New York Times reported.

DACA grants deportation relief and access to work permits to approximately 788,000 undocumented immigrants brought to this country at a young age.
