WEST LAFAYETTE — A majority of Purdue University freshmen in the College of Liberal Arts will have the option to shave off a year of school with a new "Degree in 3" initiative announced by the university Tuesday.
All 10 academic schools and departments in the College of Liberal Arts are offering majors in three-year degrees. Approximately 23 majors out of 43 total bachelor of arts degrees are available in the accelerated format, including some of the college's most popular majors such as law and society, political science and sociology.
Based on those who've already declared a major, 85 percent of freshmen in the college will be able to opt for a three-year path, according to Dean of Liberal Arts David Reingold.
Reingold said he was attracted to the initiative because it helps students move into their careers quicker and saves them a year's worth of tuition. The university estimates resident students will be able to save more than $9,000 with the program, while nonresident and international students will be able to pocket more than $18,000 and $19,000, respectively.
He's also hoping it makes the college stand out among other liberal arts schools in the region and country.
