LIBERTY — Keeping the 911 dispatch office staffed is no small task for Union County 911 Director Jenny Braun.

The dispatch office is staffed 24 hours a day, mostly with a single dispatcher, who also is expected to answer questions from the public and provide directions for emergency personnel.

The job has gotten even more difficult due to employee turnover, Braun told the Union County Council this week.

As soon as a new dispatcher is trained, they resign and take employment in Wayne County’s‘ dispatch office at twice the pay they can earn in Liberty, Braun said.

Braun asked the Union County Council this week to consider raising dispatchers’ pay because she said she’s losing dispatchers at a rapid rate.

Union County’s department is down to three full-time dispatchers, which is not enough for an operation that runs 24 hours a day, Braun said.

A full-time dispatcher in Union County is paid $26,500 a year. A part part-time dispatcher receives $9.60 an hour.
