EVANSVILLE - The University of Southern Indiana’s enrollment continues to rise.
The school’s total fall 2017 enrollment, including undergraduate, College Achievement Program dual-credit courses and graduate students, is 11,033. That’s an increase of 340 students compared to last year’s 10,693 total enrollment.
Of the total enrollment figure, 2,016 are high school students from 27 Indiana high schools enrolled in CAP classes. The program allows high school juniors and seniors to earn college credit at a reduced tuition rate.
USI’s “first time” college student enrollment grew by 37 additional students to 1,722. That’s a 2.2 percent increase compared to fall 2016 enrollment of 1,685. The average high school gradepoint average for those students was 3.36.
Graduate-level students grew by 240 this year, which officials reported is the “largest number” in USI’s 52-year history. Fall 2017 masters and doctoral program enrollment is at 1,308 students. That’s a 22.5 percent increase compared to last year’s enrollment of 1,068.
“USI has always delivered educational excellence to our students,” USI President Linda Bennett said in a news release. “It’s clear there is a greater need for graduate-level education, which is now serving as a growth driver for the institution. Seeing the advancement in these programs is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and the continued academic and professional excellence found within our offerings.”
USI started offering graduate-level programs in 1984. Currently, the university has 13 master’s programs and one doctoral program.
“The caliber of graduate students choosing USI is impressive, and it’s clear that these students are attracted to us because of the reputation of our programs and quality of our faculty,” Mayola Rowser, graduate studies director, said in a statement. “As we look to meeting the future needs of students and the community, it is clear that expanding our graduate level educational offerings is integral.”
Out-of-state and international students make up about 17 percent of USI’s student population.
Ivy Tech Community College Southwest plans to release enrollment data later this week.
The University of Evansville did not immediately respond to a request for fall 2107 enrollment numbers.
