NEW CARLISLE — Former Olive Township Clerk Sherri Houser overpaid herself by about $11,500 and used taxpayer money to pay more than $4,000 in personal electric bills, according to a report by the Indiana State Board of Accounts.

The board, which audited the township for the period of January 2014 through May of this year, found Houser overpaid herself in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Houser, who resigned in May after the audit uncovered problems, admitted to overpaying herself and using the township’s bank account to pay her electric bills. She has agreed to fully reimburse the township within two years.

“I thought we had increased my yearly salary. We didn’t, and now I have to pay that back,” she said. “I didn’t realize I overpaid myself as much as I had.”

The report has been forwarded to the office of Attorney General Curtis Hill and St. Joseph County Prosecutor Ken Cotter for review.
