U.S. Mint's new quarter has Indiana state theme

The coin depicts a frontiersmen, under the command of Col. George Rogers Clark, “crossing the flooded Wabash River to confront the British at Fort Sackville in 1779.”

Clark’s victory at Fort Sackville (at modern-day Vincennes, Indiana,) marked “the beginning of the end of British domination in America’s western frontier,” according to a History Channel description of the event.

Clark went on to become the highest- ranking American military officer of the western frontier during the Revolutionary War.

The coin’s official release will come at a celebration that day in Vincennes, home to George Rogers Clark National Historical Park. A 10 a.m. EST ceremony Nov. 14 will feature Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch for what they describe as a “coin pour” to launch the quarter. Anyone under 18 who attends the ceremony will receive a free quarter.

After the ceremony, the coin exchange will take place at the Old State Bank next door to the Pavilion. Old National Bank will facilitate the exchange of $10 rolls of new quarters for cash only, with a one roll minimum and a maximum of 10 rolls per person.

The quarter is part of the “America the Beautiful Quarters” program, with Indiana’s entry the 40th in the series and last to be launched this year.
