The 2,720 Indiana University students who studied abroad during the 2015-16 school year put the Bloomington campus at No. 7 in the 2017 International Education Exchange Open Doors Report.

New York University was No. 1, with 4,481 students, and also the top host institution for international students, with 17,326.

IU’s Bloomington campus was No. 19 in that category, with 7,502 international students for the 2016-17 school year. Study-abroad data in the report is older because it takes the International Education Exchange more time to compile those figures, said David Zaret, IU’s vice president for international affairs.

The university has made a conscious effort to increase participation in study-abroad programs for about 10 years.

Zaret said it started with IU President Michael McRobbie and the university’s first international strategic plan in 2008.

“One of the goals was to open up more opportunities for international experiences,” Zaret said.
