MUNCIE — The city of Muncie's blight removal program took another step forward recently with bids taken on razing 54 more structures.

The city's blight removal effort, funded by $4 million in federal funds awarded in 2014, has so far seen 81 properties demolished. The city hopes to raze 209 properties.

The number of vacant or blighted houses in the city has been estimated at 2,000-plus to more than 4,000 properties.

The city Board of Works and Public Safety on Wednesday opened bids for demolishing those 54 structures and took them under advisement until it next meets, on Dec. 6.
