City of Madison Board of Public Works and Safety members Monday signed a 12-month contract extension totaling $80,000 with Jefferson County Industrial Development Corp.
City officials said the contract with the organization is similar to the previous year, except the contract is for 12 months instead of six because they wanted to have the contract extend through the calendar year instead of the fiscal year.
During a short presentation, Matt Wirth, executive director of the industrial development corporation, said 2018 is “shaping up to be a robust year for us.”
Wirth said there was an uptick in leads forwarded through the state this year. Most of the leads still are looking for existing buildings, but Wirth said it wouldn’t take long to construct a building if a company makes a commitment.
The city’s shovel-ready site is ready for construction, he said, but most companies just go by what is on paper instead of traveling to the area.
“Just getting them here is half the battle,” he said.
Wirth and city officials also said the state’s decision to name Madison a Stellar Community brought additional interest in the community and its plans for the future.
“The Stellar Designation has put us on the radar throughout the Midwest,” Wirth said.
