MUNCIE — The FBI is investigating the purchase of dozens of local properties by the Muncie Sanitary District.

In late March, an FBI agent asked for and obtained information regarding at least 60 properties around the city that the Sanitary District has bought, and in many or most cases, demolished, since 2015.

FBI special agent Timothy Kempf contacted Delaware County offices, including the county assessor, to get information about the properties.

The FBI’s request was made on March 19, and the county supplied answers on March 20.

FBI spokesperson Chris Bavender declined to comment this week when contacted by The Star Press.

Tom Malapit, attorney for the Sanitary District, said Friday the district couldn't comment.

"As you know, this is an ongoing investigation and, as such, we cannot comment," Malapit said in response to an inquiry from The Star Press.

The request for information is the most visible sign of the FBI’s investigation of the Muncie Sanitary District since agents raided the district’s Kilgore Avenue offices in May 2017, serving search warrants and seizing some materials and equipment.
