Michael Wilcox has resigned as superintendent of the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corp.
The letter he submitted to the school board Wednesday afternoon was brief, three sentences.
"This letter serves as my resignation as Superintendent of the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation," Wilcox wrote. "It has been an honor and a privilege to work with the administration, staff and students of this corporation. I wish them all the best in the future."
The resignation comes after a tense few weeks following an error made by Wilcox on a document filed with the state of Indiana, which resulted in a $1.1 million property tax increase for homeowners living within the school district.
Dana Kerr, school board president, said he could not comment on personnel matters, but did praise Wilcox for the school district's accomplishments during his 5-year tenure as superintendent, including the district-wide Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math initiative, as well as achieving a district-wide "A" grade in Indiana's school accountability assessment.
"Dr. Wilcox has done a lot of good for our corporation while he was here, and we really appreciate what he's done for our corporation and wish him well," Kerr said. He said Wilcox's resignation is effective immediately.
Assistant superintendent Jerry Sanders will serve as interim superintendent until a new superintendent is hired.
