LIBERTY – The Union County-College Corner Joint School District's financial situation needs a boost, so Superintendent Christopher Winchell has taken matters into his own hands.

Winchell is advertising his school district on billboards this summer all over the area.

Among the  school district's billboards are signs on U.S. 27 North  and U.S 27 South near Richmond, one in Richmond, one on Indiana 227, U.S. 40, in Somerville, Ohio  near Oxford, and along Ind. 1 in Connersville.

Winchell, who will soon be in his second year with the school district, is trying to recruit students to his district, where enrollment is down 65 students from last year, and students equal money. Union County needs more of both, Winchell said.

“All of the billboards together don’t cost what the loss of one student costs the district in state financial support,” Winchell said. “We need to build our enrollment.”

The loss of students appears to be due to families moving from the area rather than a concern about education. Some residents say the area needs more housing to attract families to the area.
