ELKHART — Elkhart-based Skyline Corp. will suspend operations at its Elkhart plant and layoff “the majority of the workforce” there at the end of the day today.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the manufactured housing company cited an inability to profitably operate the facility since leasing it from Forest River in June of last year.

“Despite demand from manufactured housing dealerships and manufactured housing communities, the leased facility used for production prevented daily volumes to reach and maintain profitable efficiencies,” the filing reads.

“The corporation anticipates having sufficient orders to maintain production at the Elkhart facility until March 8, 2017,” it continues. “The majority of the workforce is expected to be terminated shortly after production cease.”
