LAKE STATION — The city is looking to increase activities at Veterans Park.

Dewey Lemley, the city's superintendent of Public Services, said Lake Station has received a $25,000 grant to install an ADA-accessible kayak and canoe launch on the water at Veterans Park.

He said the launch also can be used for fishing.

“It's going to be a huge upgrade to the park,” Mayor Christopher Anderson said.

Lake Station currently has a boat launch that can be used there, but it isn't ADA-accessible, Lemley said.

He said the city also plans to purchase kayaks and canoes so people could rent them at the park.

A construction schedule hasn't yet been established for the project.

“I think it's going to be fairly soon,” Lemley said.

The city also will need to create a walkway to the kayak and canoe launch as part of the project, he said.

The grant won't cover all of the work necessary for the launch, and the city has started a Gofundme page to generate $6,000 needed for the project.
