A team of biomedical experts are bringing their colony of research pigs to Montgomery County.

CorVus Biomedical has purchased 11 acres on C.R. 400N, northwest of U.S. 231 to breed swine that are shipped to universities around the world for medical testing.

The pigs are ossabaw swine, which weigh about the same as people and are susceptible to diabetes and other common human ailments. They are native to the Georgia barrier islands, and currently housed at Purdue University.

The colony will start with 40 pigs. There will be no more than 200 pigs in the facility as the company grows, chief operating officer Jim Byrd said.

CorVus expects to employ two full-time people and hopes to partner with Wabash College to provide students with field training opportunities.
