Mulzer Crushed Stone has been sold to CHR, a building materials company based in Dublin, Ireland, CHR said in a media release. The release, dated Wednesday, lists Mulzer among a series of acquisitions made by CHR thus far in 2017. The company said its total spend this year on “acquisition and investment” is 500 million euros, which comes to about $531 million U.S. dollars, while its disposals have totaled 400 million euros (about $425 smillion).

Repeated attempts in recent days by the Courier & Press to reach Mulzer officials have been
unsuccessful. According to the CHR release, Mulzer “is one of the largest privately held aggregates producers in the United States and operates six quarries, five sand and gravel operations, 14 aggregates yards, four ready mixed concrete

plants and three asphalt plants, serving the Ohio and Kanawha river valleys.” Mulzer, based in Tell City but with a sprawling presence on the Ohio River near Downtown Evansville, has been a family- owned business since 1935, when Roland, Edgar and Arnold Mulzer, Sr. began building culverts for highway construction.

“In 1946, the Mulzer brothers saw the need for a close supply of construction aggregates during the post World War II construction boom. To help fulfill that need, the Mulzers opened their first limestone quarry at Eckerty, Indiana, and delivered on their first contract, 1,500 tons,” according to the company website.

The company claims 600 employees spanning three states.
