PORTAGE — The City Council this week approved a tax abatement which may lead to 160 to 200 new jobs in the city.
The council approved a 5-year personal property tax abatement for Camaco of Indiana, a subsidiary of Camaco-Amvian. Its parent company is P&C Group, which has facilities in the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Poland and Germany.
The company manufactures steel seat frames for the automotive industry and plans on being located in a building at AmeriPlex at the Port business park, company representative Scott Jones told the council.
Jones said the company will be investing $8.8 million in new equipment. The project will include the installation of eight assembly lines, including conveying and testing equipment as well as for distribution.
Jones said the company will hire 160 to 200 people with an average salary of $17 per hour. The job openings will be posted through the Center of Workforce Innovations.
According to paperwork filed with the city, work will begin in mid June on renovating the building and installing manufacturing equipment with a completion date of Dec. 31, 2018. Renovations include upgrading lighting, upgrading the office area, adding a cafeteria and installing new restrooms.
