ELKHART — A pair of education foundations have selected Elkhart County as one of seven new “Talent Hubs” nationwide, earning the county $275,000 in grants to support higher education among the county’s Latino community.

The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation, along with the Detroit-based Kresge Foundation, announced today the expansion of the program that began with 17 cities in 2017. The Talent Hub designation provides funds to communities to improve educational access and help increase the national post-high school educational level to 60 percent of working age adults by 2025.

Elkhart County is the second Indiana community to become a part of the program, joining Columbus.

“The Talent Hub designation serves both as an aspirational target for other cities and a foundation from which cities designated as Talent Hubs can build,” said Jamie Merisotis, president and CEO of Lumina Foundation.

Elkhart County’s program will be lead locally by the Horizon Education Alliance, a nonprofit that focuses on improving education for people of all ages in the county. Ivy Tech and Goshen College will be partners in the program.
