With the flash of one number, Angie Davies, Brent Sandman and the rest of the many people involved with SCUFFY breathed a sigh of relief Wednesday night.
When the digit '7' appeared on the screen, it indicated Shelby County United Fund For You reached its goal of $825,000 in 2017. And the audience who attended the end of drive dinner responded, giving a standing ovation.
“This was a close one,” Davies, the executive director, said after the big reveal. “Sixty-three years in a row. What can I say? Congratulations Shelby County because its all about you, so thank you, thank you, thank you.”
SCUFFY raised $827,896.96 — or $2,896.96 more than the goal. The organization still needed less than 10 percent of the goal heading into the final day, but reached it.
The end of drive dinner was a chance for SCUFFY organizers to thank the companies, schools and individuals who made it possible to reach their goal for the 63rd time in a row.
