MUNCIE — A former gas station that's been an eyesore on the west side of downtown Muncie for several years will be demolished by the city and replaced by greenspace.

The action on the former Marathon station along West Jackson Street near Kilgore Avenue, which has been under consideration by the city for a greenspace and downtown gateway for several years, is among the structures the city of Muncie acted on this week for ultimate demolition.

Others include a portion of a former commercial building adjacent to the former Marathon in the 800 block of West Jackson Street as well as two properties near White River that the city purchased for Mayor Dennis Tyler's riverfront redevelopment proposal.

Action on the various properties came in board of works and Muncie Redevelopment Commission meetings this week.
