East Chicago's Hoist Liftruck hiring 50 more workers

Joseph S. Pete, Times of Northwest Indiana

Hoist Liftruck, the industrial forklift maker that relocated from Illinois to East Chicago, plans to hire 50 more workers to build a new tractor.

The company plans to employ up to 500 by 2022 as it ramps up production in the former Blaw-Knox tank factory at 4407 Railroad Ave. in downtown East Chicago. They will work as assemblymen for the new Hoist T-Series line.

This year, Hoist Liftruck started making a Hoist T-Series diesel-powered truck and will start production next year on an additional terminal tractor, the electric-powered TE-Series. The company said it needs to hire 30 people right away to work in the new terminal tractor assembly area, and will need 50 employees there once production reaches full speed.

"The dedicated line will mimic Hoist’s current vertically integrated manufacturing model, with single piece flow throughout the entire line all the way down to the finished terminal tractor," Hoist Liftruck said in a statement. "Current plans estimate five completed terminal tractors each day at full capacity."

The company has pledged it would pay workers an average of $55,000 a year and offer benefits.

The high-capacity lift truck maker has a “100% Made in the U.S.A." slogan, and will produce 75 percent of each terminal tractor in house in East Chicago. It will use American-made parts, including from many Indiana-based or Midwestern companies.

"Many of Hoist’s current vendors will be utilized in the Hoist T-Series finished product, including AxleTech, D&S Manufacturing, Cummins, Allison and Hendrickson," Hoist Liftruck said in a statement. All are based in the U.S., driving down lead times for Hoist customers. One of the new terminal tractor vendors includes PDF Inc., a company that is based in the Midwest. PDF Inc. will be providing fabricated parts for the Hoist T-Series.

Anyone interested in applying for one of the new jobs should email a resume to Hoist HR Director Barry Patterson at barry@hoistlift.com.
