MUNCIE — The Delaware County commissioners are allowing time for possible restrictions on large animal-feeding-and-growing operations that could affect a proposed 10,000-hog farm in the county's northern reaches.
The commissioners on Monday voted unanimously to pass the ordinance "establishing a moratorium on certain uses within farming zones" to the Metropolitan Plan Commission.
In response to questions from the audience, County Attorney John Brooke indicated the restrictions would apply to the proposed Rhett Light farm on County Road 1270-North.
The Metropolitan Plan Commission would act on the ordinance introduced by the commissioners in Monday's meeting. Marta Moody, executive director of the plan commission, noted that the group doesn't meet again until June 7, following two more county commissioner meetings.

The county commissioners have varied in their response to protests over the planned CAFO. Initially they maintained they could do little more than hold building permits for the project since it had been approved by the state.
