The city of Richmond still has a long way to go before remediation and demolition of the former Reid Hospital property can begin, but Richmond Common Council members now have a clearer picture of what steps need to be taken.
"I think we're all on the same page now," council president Misty Hollis said. She arranged a work session for city leaders and council members Monday night to discuss the future of the former hospital campus at 1401 Chester Blvd.
The abandoned property has become an eyesore and possible deterrent to businesses considering investing in the community.
City officials, in cooperation with the Wayne County commissioners and council, have been exploring options for the site for some time, with an increase in activity during the past year.
City Controller Beth Fields, former director of the city's Department of Infrastructure and Development, and Mayor Dave Snow said the city must determine if a full or updated assessment of the property is needed and the city must determine how it will pay back federal loans available through the Indiana Brownfield Program that can be used for remediation of the building.
