A Yorktown-based organization will begin offering services for local seniors and those with disabilities starting July 1 after the local provider ceases operations.

Area 9 In-Home & Community Services Agency has informed the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration that it won't seek to renew its designation to provide services in Wayne, Union, Fayette, Franklin and Rush counties after the current grant period expires June 30, according to an announcement from Area 9.

The organization serves about 10,000 residents, providing supportive services to enable those with disabilities of all ages and seniors to live at home and avoid premature or inappropriate placement in a nursing facility.

“Area 9 has had a supportive partnership with Indiana University East for 42 years, however, the health care landscape has changed dramatically over the past four decades  — and so has the IU East campus," Tony Foster, executive director of Area 9, said in a statement.

"These changes have caused us to pause and examine our future and determine what is best for those we serve. LifeStream is highly regarded throughout the state of Indiana and shares our same mission to serve.”

FSSA has negotiated a plan to continue delivering local assistance through LifeStream Services Inc. starting July 1. Area 9 has been part of conversations to assist in the transition, the agency said.
