ELKHART — City officials and Flaherty and Collins Properties company representatives stood side by side on Tuesday morning and simultaneously flung dirt forward to mark the beginning of construction on the long-discussed luxury apartment project located in downtown Elkhart.

Development company Flaherty and Collins hosted the small event which featured a series of speakers, including Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese, who cheered the project and its potential economic impact.

“Elkhart is growing, and it’s growing in a significant fashion,” Neese said. “It is my hope and belief that the impetus for future development projects citywide will welcome more people to live and invest in our city. I’m excited about the future of our city and all that is yet to come.”

The apartment complex will sit alongside the Elkhart River off of South Elkhart Avenue.

Neese mentioned the large number of individuals –- estimated to be 28,000 by Flaherty and Collins vice president of development Brian Prince — who commute to Elkhart on a daily basis but do not call the city home.
