Late Wednesday, former FBI Director Robert Mueller was appointed as a special counsel by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to oversee the investigation into Russia’s meddling in last year’s presidential election. This is excellent news for all Americans seeking the truth in this most important matter.

In the swarm of news of the past few days, there has been much innuendo and rumor regarding President Donald Trump and his recently fired FBI Director James Comey and less hard evidence.

“Only seven days after Trump was sworn in as president, Comey has told associates, the [now former] FBI director was summoned to the White House for a one-on-one dinner,” reported The New York Times’ Michael Schmidt on May 11. “[Trump] turned the conversation to whether Comey would pledge his loyalty to him. Comey declined to make that pledge. Instead, Comey has recounted to others, he told Trump that he would always be honest with him, but that he was not ‘reliable’ in the conventional political sense.”

The following morning, Trump took to his Twitter account to issue a veiled threat.

“James Comey better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press," Trump tweeted.

Schmidt broke the story open even wider Tuesday.

“Trump asked Comey to shut down the federal investigation into Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, in an Oval Office meeting in February, according to a memo Comey wrote shortly after the meeting,” he reported. “’I hope you can let this go,’ the president told Comey, according to the memo.”

Enough. We need to see the evidence now. This memo needs to be subpoenaed right away. We need the full text. Comey, to his credit, apparently expected this and has demanded any future testimony occur in public. There are certainly more memos than this one. We need to see those as well.

And, if there is a secret White House recording system, those recordings need to be subpoenaed immediately. Until that happens any “tapes” Trump has could be destroyed.

The nation demands answers. We’re done with the insinuations and whispers. We hope Mueller will expedite this process.
