COMMENTARY: Mandatory cursive? A better way for an Indiana senator's obsession

Then again, so is state Sen. Jean Leising’s (R-Oldenburg) annual effort to force Indiana’s schools to loop cursive writing skills into their curriculum, as seen in this week’s filing of Senate Bill 8.

My story, dating back to the days when posters illustrating the proper flow of a cursive alphabet were standard issue above blackboards of Wedgwood Elementary, involves the career counseling of Mrs. Jasin, my fourth-grade teacher.

The prescription-pad font my hand produced, barely legible no matter how many practice worksheets she piled on my desk, had her convinced I was destined to be a doctor. She couldn’t abide my lack of care and finesse, sure that my means of written communication would be lost on everyone but those wise in the ways of deciphering a physician’s scratch at the drug store counter.
