One woman died and at least 11 people have been treated at the hospital after a rash of heroin and synthetic marijuana overdoses that started Wednesday afternoon and continued Friday.

Bloomington police investigated at least 10 overdose-related emergencies in a 24-hour period on Thursday, and detectives spent Friday trying to find the suppliers of the drugs here locally.

Police on Thursday night arrested one man on preliminary charges of dealing in synthetic marijuana and dealing in controlled substances, but investigators have not immediately connected the 26-year-old Bloomington man to the people who have overdosed this week.

“Our investigators are working really hard to investigate the source of the Spice. He was arrested as part of our investigation. We cannot connect him to any of the overdoses, but that’s still under investigation,” Bloomington Police Department Capt. Steve Kellams said Friday.

This week’s overdose victims appear to have consumed one of two types of drugs, either an opioid or a synthetic marijuana, known as Spice. Preliminary reports do not indicate people are using both drugs at the same time and overdosing as a result, Kellams said.

Police and rescue workers, however, are finding that the opioid antidote naloxone has been providing some relief for those who have overdosed on Spice.
