After a year in which the word “retailpocalypse” gained popularity, Hoosiers can peek behind the curtain to see how one subset of the retail industry beat out traditional storefronts in the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s November unemployment report.

Of all industries represented in November’s report, the electronic shopping and mail-order house industry saw the highest percentage of employment growth in the state. Companies that deal in internetbased retail filled positions such as stock clerk and order filler to increase the number of Hoosiers that industry employs by 34 percent from November 2016 to November 2017. Traditional retail trade, however, saw only a slight gain in employment over last year, with an increase of 0.76 percent in Indiana.

Such gains occurred within a state that has maintained an unemployment rate equal to or less than the national average for more than four years. Indiana has a total of 3.28 million people who are employed or are actively pursuing employment. Nearly 64 percent of Hoosiers over the age of 16 participate in that labor force, whereas the national labor force participation rate sits at just less than 63 percent.
