MOORESVILLE — The Nice-Pak project on Mooresville’s south side cleared a couple of hurdles Thursday night after the town’s plan commission approved both a resolution and plat request for the proposed expansion.

Morgan County Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Mike Dellinger gave a brief explanation on the proposed project.

Originally, Nice-Pak announced an $80 million expansion and a new 760,000-square-foot facility at the intersection of Bethel and Merriman roads.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nice-Pak saw an increase in the demand for its products — primarily wet wipes.

“So Nice-Pak came back to us last year in 2020 to announce the expansion of the announced expansion and retention project,” Dellinger said.

The Nice-Pak project has now grown to a $160 million that includes 250 new jobs to Morgan County and the construction of two buildings.

“One roughly 309,000-square-foot distribution center north of the redevelopment commission’s spec building that we have out at State Road 67 and Merriman,” Dellinger said. “And then to the west of the tree line, there will be about another 920,000-square-foot building.”

Both the Mooresville Redevelopment Commission (RDC) and town council approved an incentive package with Nice-Pak back in December 2020.

At Thursday’s meeting, the plan commission was presented a resolution of support that both the town council and RDC were requesting.

The approval, Dellinger noted, allows the project to move forward in the coming weeks.

“They have committed to the community that they anticipate starting this site work, roughly, in March,” Dellinger said.

The plan commission unanimously approved the resolution in support of the project, 5-0.

Merriman and Bethel plat

Later in the meeting, Banning Engineering’s Ryan Lindley presented a secondary plat request on behalf of the Nice-Pak project.

According to Lindley, the plat being requested is for two lots.

He noted that the larger of the two buildings would be located on the west side of the property, closer to Bethel Road.

The smaller warehouse building would be located on the east side of the property, closer to Ind. 67.

The smaller structure, Lindley noted, is “phase two” of the project.

“The phase two building will not be built initially,” he said. “It is a short-term goal within the next two to five years.”

The truck entrance for the future Nice-Pak will be located on Merriman Road, just before Bethel Road, according to Lindley.

“And they will exit the same location,” Lindley said.

The commission unanimously approved the plat, 5-0.
