The deadline to file for the vacancy in the Second Congressional District lapsed Wednesday, with a dozen candidates announcing their intention to participate in Saturday’s caucus.

Rep. Jackie Walorski, who previously represented the district, died earlier this month in a car crash.

Because her death happened more than 74 days before the November election, Gov. Eric Holcomb called a special election to fulfill her term, which ends in January. Saturday’s caucus will host two concurrent nominations, one for a candidate to finish Walorski’s term and another to serve the full two-year term that starts in January.

The caucuses will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Mishawaka, with a livestream of the proceeding at facebook.com/indgop.

Kyle Hupfer, the Indiana Republican Party Chairman, will oversee the caucus and multiple rounds of voting until one candidate receives a majority vote. Once selected, Hupfer will submit the nomination to the Indiana Election Division.

The event will begin with the nomination process for the candidate for the full, two-year term and, once selected, repeat with the candidates for the temporary vacancy.

Because of redistricting in the Second Congressional District, some voters fall under the old borders for the district and will only select someone to finish the term. Others will elect someone for a new term while the majority of the district will cast their ballots for both races.

The twelve candidates who filed to run for the Second Congressional District, in both races, are:

  • Dallas Barkman
  • Terry Harper, III
  • Curtis Hill, Jr.
  • Michael Hogberg
  • Scott Huffman
  • Tiernan Kane
  • Daniel Koors
  • Marvin Layne
  • Curtis Nisly
  • Christy Stutzman
  • Scott Wise
  • Rudolph Yakym III
